Inverter Repair in Nigeria: Faults, Checks and Repair vs Replace

Inverter repair starts with finding the fault, not swapping parts. A qualified technician reads the error code, tests the battery bank, checks the DC side, the AC load and the earthing, then tells you whether the problem sits in the inverter, the batteries, the panels or the original installation. This site is advertising for independent Nigerian solar technicians and repairs nothing itself, so this page shows you what a proper job looks like before you let anyone touch your system.

The usual complaints are an inverter that beeps and trips when the AC comes on, tubular batteries that no longer last the night, panels that seem to give less after harmattan, and a system that was badly installed and keeps cutting out. Call now and describe yours, with the inverter model, the battery type and how old everything is. Any repair price has to come from the technician's written quote, because no published inverter repair charge was found for Nigeria.

What We Handle

What's Included in Every Visit

Fault diagnosis before any quote

A technician reads the inverter's error code and display, then tests battery voltage, charge current and the connected load before naming a part or a price.

Battery health testing

When batteries no longer last the night, age and battery type are checked first. Lead-acid batteries last only three to five years, according to BusinessDay in February 2026.

Overload and tripping checks

A 5 kVA inverter at 0.8 power factor carries about 4 kW of real load (our arithmetic from the kVA to kW relationship). The technician compares your AC, pumping machine and other loads against the kW figure on the datasheet.

Panel cleaning after harmattan

Dust on panels cuts the light reaching the cells. A maintenance visit covers cleaning, connector and mount checks, and a look at the panel cables.

Putting right bad installations

Loose terminals, undersized cables, missing breakers or surge protection, poor earthing and badly ventilated batteries should be found and corrected, or the job redone properly.

Findings and quote in writing

You should get the fault found, the exact parts by model, the warranty on the repair and the VAT treatment on paper before work begins.

What a technician checks when an inverter beeps or trips

A good technician works from the symptom to the cause in a set order. The point is to avoid replacing an expensive inverter when the real fault is a loose battery cable or an overloaded circuit.

  • Error code and indicator lights: read first, against the maker's manual for that exact model.
  • Battery voltage at rest and under load: a bank that sags the moment the AC starts is often the real cause of tripping.
  • Terminals, lugs and cables: signs of heat, looseness, corrosion or cable that is too thin for the current.
  • Connected load against inverter rating: kW on the datasheet, not just the kVA on the box.
  • Protection and earthing: DC and AC isolators, breakers, surge protection and earthing in place and working.
  • Battery location: ventilated, away from living areas and heat, and lithium batteries with a battery management system.

Please do not open the inverter or touch battery terminals yourself. Switching the inverter off does not make the battery side safe, and DC and battery work is for a qualified technician. NEMSA guidelines as reported in April 2026 say rooftop solar installation must be done only by electrical contractors holding NEMSA certification, so ask anyone who works on your system for their NEMSA competency certificate and look it up on the NEMSA verification page.

Batteries that no longer last the night

If your system used to carry the house until morning and now dies by midnight, the batteries are the first suspect. BusinessDay reported in February 2026 that lead-acid batteries last only three to five years, so a tubular bank past that age is probably worn out, not faulty. Lithium makers claim far more cycles. The Felicity LPBF48100-A manual states 6,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge with a 5-year warranty, and the Luminous LPT 1240H tubular lists up to 1,500 cycles at 80% depth of discharge. That is 4 times the cycles on each maker's own test conditions, and manufacturer-stated is not the same as tested in your house.

For a sense of replacement cost, Mercury Direct listed a 220Ah tall tubular battery at N260,000 on 14 October 2026 and a 5 kWh lithium battery at N1,150,000, while SMK Solar listed its 5 kWh lithium battery at N1,200,000. These are one seller's prices on one day, and naira prices move with the exchange rate, so treat a current written quote as the real number. Before any battery is swapped, the technician should confirm that the new battery's voltage and type match the inverter's settings. If you are moving from tubular to lithium, see inverter and battery installation for what that change involves.

Panels, harmattan dust and maintenance visits

Harmattan carries dust from the Sahel and Sahara, and academic work at Ilorin treats November to March as the season. The measured losses come from the worst-hit places. A Maiduguri field test (Abdulkarim et al., 2022) found more than 50% loss in power output under 14 days of continuous deposition, and a Calabar dry-season test (Oyom et al., 2023) found dust cut the sunlight reaching the panel by 21.1%. No measured soiling figure was found for Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin City or Enugu, so nobody can honestly tell you your loss is a fixed percentage.

Heat costs output too. A Jinko Tiger Neo datasheet lists a Pmax temperature coefficient of about -0.29% per degC, which works out to about 8.7% of rated power lost when a cell runs 30 degC above the 25 degC test condition (our arithmetic). That is not a fault, and cleaning will not fix it, so a technician should separate dust loss, heat loss and a real defect.

SustifyHomes, a quote marketplace, listed a maintenance visit at N25,000 to N60,000 in its August 2026 cost guide, covering panel cleaning, torque checks, firmware and a health report. Treat that as a range one source published, not a quote from this site. Roof access and wiring checks are for a qualified technician, so do not climb up with a bucket and a hose to save the call-out.

Repair or replace, and what to get in writing

Repair makes sense when the inverter is still under warranty, when the fault turns out to be a battery, a connection or a protection device, or when the unit is sound but was badly installed. Warranty terms vary by maker: SMK Solar states 18 months on the hybrid inverter in its 3.5 kVA panel package, itel states a 3-year warranty on its hybrid inverters, and Deye's official terms read 5 years from the date of installation, with 10 years optional. Check the paperwork for your own unit, because terms in Nigeria depend on the distributor.

Replacement can win when the repair quote climbs toward the price of a new unit. As listed on 14 October 2026, Mercury Direct priced a 3.5 kVA hybrid inverter at N380,000 and a 5 kVA at N595,000 (a sale price, down from N798,000), and SMK Solar priced a 3.5 kW hybrid at N345,000 to N385,000. Ask the technician for the repair quote and the replacement price side by side. For wider context on system costs, see solar system prices in Nigeria.

  • The fault found, in plain words, and the parts to be changed by exact model.
  • Serial numbers of any new part, with the warranty terms on the part and on the labour.
  • The VAT treatment shown on the quote, and a receipt you keep.
  • The technician's NEMSA competency certificate, which you can check on the NEMSA verification page.

Fake parts are a real risk. Industry experts quoted by NAN in July 2026 say batteries and inverters are among the most counterfeited items and that fake batteries and inverters are the biggest fire risk, so check serial numbers, QR codes and warranty papers and buy from authorised dealers. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018 gives a right to return goods that do not match the agreed specification for a full refund (s 122, as quoted by Templars in June 2025), which is why the exact models belong on the quote. If the real problem is a poor original job, a technician may recommend a proper redo, as covered under home solar installation.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my inverter beep and trip when I switch on the AC?

Usually the total load, with start-up surge, passes what the inverter can carry. LG rates a 9,000 BTU inverter split AC at 1,000 W cooling input and a 12,000 BTU unit at 1,090 W rated and 1,350 W maximum. A 3.5 kVA inverter at 0.8 power factor carries about 2.8 kW of real load, and a 5 kVA about 4 kW, so an AC plus a pumping machine start and other loads can trip it. Read the kW figure on your inverter's datasheet and let a technician check the load.

How long should my batteries last before I replace them?

BusinessDay reported in February 2026 that lead-acid batteries last only three to five years. The Felicity LPBF48100-A lithium manual states 6,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge and a 5-year warranty, against up to 1,500 cycles for the Luminous LPT 1240H tubular. Those are manufacturer-stated figures on each maker's own test conditions, not results from your house, so a battery test by a technician is the real answer.

Does harmattan dust really cut solar output?

In the worst-hit places it does. A Maiduguri field test found more than 50% loss in power output under 14 days of continuous dust deposition, and a Calabar dry-season test found a 21.1% cut in the sunlight reaching the panel. No measured soiling figure was found for Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Ibadan, Benin City or Enugu. SustifyHomes listed a maintenance visit with panel cleaning at N25,000 to N60,000 in August 2026.

Is it better to repair or replace a faulty inverter?

Repair tends to win when the unit is in warranty (SMK states 18 months on one hybrid inverter, itel 3 years, Deye 5 years from installation) or when the fault is a battery or connection. Mercury Direct listed a 3.5 kVA hybrid inverter at N380,000 and a 5 kVA at a sale price of N595,000 on 14 October 2026, so compare any repair quote against those. No published repair charge was found, so the technician's written quote is the only number that counts.

How do I know the technician is qualified and the parts are genuine?

Ask for the NEMSA competency certificate and check it on the NEMSA verification page at nemsa.gov.ng/verification/. For parts, check serial numbers, QR codes and warranty papers, and buy from authorised dealers, because industry experts quoted by NAN in July 2026 name fake batteries and inverters as the biggest fire risk. Mercury Direct listed a 220Ah tall tubular battery at N260,000 on 14 October 2026, so a price far below that deserves questions. Get the exact models and VAT treatment written on the quote.
